KARACHI: Acting Sindh Assembly Speaker Rehana Leghari on Thursday issued production order for Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.

He will be produced in tomorrow’s session in Sindh Assembly which will be attended by several notable parliamentarians of the province.

Earlier today, the Speaker Sindh Assembly was produced before the accountability court amid tight security as anti-graft watchdog sought his physical remand.

As the hearing went under way, the NAB prosecutor informed the court, Mr Durrani is accused of possessing assets beyond his known sources of income. His 14-day physical remand should be granted to continue an inquiry against him.

At this, the Durranis lawyer said, Yesterday, the NAB conducted a raid on the PPP leaders house and officials misbehaved and harassed the family of Speaker Sindh Assembly. My client is not being given medical assistance and is not allowed to meet his family.

The court then questioned that whether NAB has a personal enmity with Speaker Sindh Assembly, Durranis counsel said, I will submit a written plea against the attitude of accountability bureau officials.

There is no need to grant physical remand of his client, the counsel added. However, the court granted NAB the physical remand of the PPP leader till 1st March.

Earlier, he was arrested on Wednesday by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from Islamabad in a case pertaining to possessing assets beyond his known sources of income.

He was transferred to Karachi yesterday night after NAB acquired a three-day transitional remand of the Speaker Sindh Assembly.

According to sources, Durrani has been arrested in a case pertaining to owning assets beyond his known sources of income. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader was arrested from a private hotel in federal capital and has been shifted to the NAB headquarters.

NAB officials will produce the PPP leader before an accountability court today to seek his remand .He will be shifted to Karachi after getting transitional remand, sources added.

Last year, NAB had initiated three separate inquiries against Speaker Sindh Assembly for allegedly owning assets beyond means and illegally influencing the recruitment procedure for various government jobs. 352 individuals were appointed illegally by the influence of Mr Durrani, sources further added.

Durrani was asked to appear before NAB in Karachi several times, but he didnt appeared before accountability watchdog, sources concluded.

His arrest warrants were signed and issued by Chairman NAB Justice (R) Javed Iqbal.

Its Durranis second tenure as Speaker Sindh Assembly after being re-elected in August 2018.
