LONDON: Begum Kulsoom Nawaz the wife of 3 time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former 3 time first lady of Pakistan, succumbed to a long and testing battle with cancer in a hospital in London today, tuesday.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif and her son, Hussain Nawaz, confirmed that the former first lady breathed her last at a clinic in London.

She was placed on life support last night as her health deteriorated.

Sources at the clinic said she had developed a lungs problem again.

“She had been responding well without the ventilator until last night,” the sources said.

According to sources, the Sharif family has decided to bring back Begum Kulsoom’s body to Pakistan.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam had delayed their return to Pakistan owing to the prevailing illness of Kulsoom Nawaz. Sources said the former premier, who reached London along with his daughter on Thursday to tend to his wife, was advised by doctors to delay his return to the country — which was initially planned for Sunday (July).

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s health had been worsening after her throat cancer began to spread to the rest of her body. She was admitted to a hospital in London in September 2017 after she was diagnosed with a throat cancer. She underwent a surgery wherein doctors removed the cancerous tumours in her throat.

However, six chemotherapy sessions later, her cancer had returned and was spreading to the rest of her body, sources familiar with the matter said. Begum Kulsoom was re-hospitalised a few days later after she vomited excessively and complained of dehydration. Upon further diagnosis, her doctors suggested that she undergo radiotherapy and stay in hospital longer.
