KARACHI: Police and law enforcement agencies (LEAs) on Monday carried out a raid in Malir and arrested UC chairman Rahim Shah accused of killing Sindhi nationalist leader Irshad Ranjhani.

According to details, the accused has been shifted to unidentified location for further investigation. Sources informed that SSP Malir will hold a press conference today and brief media about the arrest of Rahim Shah.

It is pertinent to mention that Sindhi nationalist party Irshad Ranjhani was allegedly shot dead by Union Council chairman Rahim Shah in Bhains Colony neighbourhood on Thursday (last week). The victim remained lying on the road with bullet wounds for at least one hour before breathing his last.

Taking the notice, CM Murad had sought the complete report of incident from Inspector General Sindh Police and ordered to arrest the culprit. Raheem Shah, the local UC chairman, had claimed that he opened fire on Irshad Ranjhani, who was later identified as president of Jeay Sindh Tehreeks (JST) Karachi chapter, while foiling a robbery attempt.

The brother of the slain nationalist leader said that Ranjhani had left for Hyderabad on Tuesday and since then he was out of contact with the family. He alleged that the UC chairman was used by someone else to kill his brother, saying Ranjhani was not a criminal but a political activist.

Ranjhani’s mother died of shock when his body was brought at home. According to eye witnesses, Ranjhani sustained bullet wounds and remained on the road for at least an hour in injured condition before shifting him to police station instead of hospital.

Police came at the scene very late and surprisingly took the injured to police station first and later referred to hospital but Ranjhani breathed his last before reaching the medical facility, they added.

Members of the civil society have taken to social media, using the hashtag #JusticeForIrshadRanjhani and posted videos showing the UC chairman shooting Ranjhani in front of a crowd and demanded to arrest accused.
